August Visitor

Friend, Paula, said, "I'm going to visit my son and his family in August.  I responded, "Well, I think I will go with you."  "That's great," Paula said excitedly.  Paula flew in from New Jersey to Pittsburgh.  Christy and I picked her up at the airport.

That evening, we started our visit by going to a dance class to learn the waltz.  Our instructor was Juliann who was great.  We had a lot of fun.

Paula and I left the next morning for our road trip in her rental car, the subaru.

As we arrived in Dayton, OH, we met Paula's family, son Jay, his lovely wife, Jodie, and teenage daughters, Cheyenne and Ianna.

We also met the family pets, lap dog, Dobie, and persnickity cat, Quebecca.  We got a big laugh out of the conflict between the dog and cat.  The little dog was afraid of the oversized cat.

Paula's famiy was very happy to see us and stated, "We kept this week open for your visit."

On Saturday, we toured the Air Force Museum with Paula's family. We liked the tribute to the many flight pioneers and aviators and their amazing developments in air travel throughtout the twentith century.

Went to church Sunday at the University of Dayton campus chapel.  We had the pleasure of meeting Father Fitz.

Paula offered to treat me and the girls to a movie, Batman III, "The Dark Knight Rises Again."

Monday we conducted a tour of Dayton.  We were quite successful in finding the Wright Memorial.  Markers explained the fields below, called the Huffman Prairie, where the Wright brothers, Orville and Wilbur, experimented with their airplane invention.

We also visited the Wright Cycle Company, a National Historic Landmark.

The museum had many interesting exhibits including an original airplane that the Wright brothers flew while experimenting.

We spent our last night at home with the family.  They are fans of the Dr. Who, a British science fiction television program, which first appeared on BBC on November 23, 1963.  The Head of Drama, Canadian Sydney Newman, was mainly responsible for developing the program.

The Eleven Faces of Dr. Who

The next day it was time to hit the road to travel back east. We stopped to visit Kathy and Phil Stukus in a lovely wooded area of Granville, OH. Kathy, Paula, and I had lunch at the quaint Granville Hotel.

On our way, we stopped at Nararre, OH, to check on Paula's cousin who was in a nursing home.  Unfortunately, she had passed away last year, 2011.

By the time we were on the road again it was dusk.  We headed east for Pennsylvania.  One stop for gas and a quick hamburger at MacDonald's.

It is time for Paula to catch her plane to head back to New Jersey.  Paula had made a reservation at a hotel near the airport so she would be close to the airport when she had to leave the next morning.  As I drove her to the hotel on Friday night, we reminisced about the past week...of our trip to Ohio, our dancing class, our swim class, visit to the famous Baldinger's International Foods store in Zelienople, our lunch at the LongHorn Restaurant with friend Loretta, and visit to Sorgel's Farm Market.

With sad realization that our visit was over, we hope we can do it again sometime in the future!

July

Quintilis

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the 10-month calendar of ancient Rome, Quintilis follows Junius (the month of June) and precedes Sextilis (later August). Quintilis is Latin for "fifth", that is, it was the fifth month (quintilis mensis) in the earliest calendar attributed to Romulus, which began with the month of Martius ("Mars' month," or March). After the calendar reform that produced a 12-month year, Quintilis became the seventh month, but retained its name. In 45 BC, Julius Caesar instituted a new calendar that made up for astronomical discrepancies in the old, and after his death in 44 BC the month of Quintilis, his birth month, was renamed Julius in his honor, hence July. The month name is also attested as Quinctilis.

My cat,Jessie, had been sick.  I noticed that the cats weren't eating or drinking as much as usual.  Jessie was lying around and being listless.  I went to daughter, Angie's, on Saturday, June 9, 2012, and stayed overnight.  I came home Sunday morning to get ready for Michele's graduation party.  Jessie was still lying around and looked like she had lost alot of weight.  She wouldn't eat or drink.  She was breathing very heavily.  Daughter,Christy, came down and said she didn't think Jessie would make it.

We went to Michele's graduation party for her daughter.  When we came back, Jessie was worse.  Christy left for home and texted Angie about Jessie.  Then Angie called me and said, "Why didn't you let me know about Jessie?"  Angie's son, Christian, already had strep throat.  She had to take her son, Luke, to the doctor on Monday morning for his routine checkup.  He also has strep throat.  Then she and kids came down to my house.  We weren't sure what to do about cat, Jessie.  I said it would be better to let her die instead of taking her to a vet who would torture her with tests.  Angie took Jessie to the Cranberry Cat Clinic while I watched the kids. They took x-rays, over $100, and advised her to take Jessie to the Pittsburgh Veterinary on Camp Horne Road which she did.  They asked Angie, "Do you want us to do CPR?" Angie said, "No."  They did take Jessie back and tapped her chest or lungs???  They managed to get some fluid up. Later, they came out and told Angie that Jessie had died on her own.  We felt bad that we weren't there in her presence when she died.  Maybe it would have been better to just leave her at home where we could have been with her at the end.  Pgh.Vet. charged over $400 for that visit.  They did give her a casket.  Angie took Jessie up to her house.  Angie's husband, Chris, came down here and picked up the kids.  In all the ruckus, Angie forgot her cellphone at my house which meant we couldn't even contact her to see what was going on.  Angie went to work Tuesday.  I came up to Angie's house.  I brought a shovel, and we buried Jessie at Angie's house. I stayed at Angie's until Friday since she was working.  I came back home on Friday night.  I brought my other cat, Scooter, to Angie's with me for the week.  Scooter, was very upset without his friend.  He kept looking all over my house for Jessie.  I tried to tell him that she is no longer here.
